Abstract

The IBM 3447 Digital Linear Tape Library is an automated tape library supported on selected IBM Netfinity(TM) server and IBM PC Server(TM) systems. It automates the latest DLT7000 tape drives. It includes one removable 10-cartridge magazine and five fixed cells, yielding a total capacity of 15 cartridges. It can be configured with one or two DLT7000 tape drives. The latter offers additional enhanced functions such as faster transfer of data, simultaneous backup, concurrent read-write operations, and fault tolerance. The 3447 utilizes DLT-format tape cartridges that provide 35GB native capacity and up to 70GB with 2:1 hardware controlled data compression, giving the 3447 a typical storage capacity of up to 1.05TB with compression. The 3447 has a native data rate of 5MB per second and up to 10MB per second with compression. This is equivalent to 36GB per hour with compression on a one-drive model and up to 72GB per hour with compression on a split-host, two-drive model. A bar code reader, allowing for positive tape cartridge identification and inventory, and an operator display are included.

The IBM 3447 models can be used for save/restore, program distribution, migration, data interchange, automatic migration of data between disk storage and tape, and mass storage for data archive. Full interchange of data is supported with the IBM 35/70GB Internal Digital Linear Tape Drive (00K7900) using DLT-format cartridges, used in the PC Server 704. In addition to reading and writing on DLT-format tape cartridges, the 3447 provides an enhanced functional alternative to 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives. Storage and tape management for the 3447 is provided by software such as IBM ADSTAR(TM) Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) and other industry-leading compatible software offerings.

Description

Consider the 3447 Digital Linear Tape Library if your business is:

  • Experiencing growth in online storage requirements
  • Considering tape autoloaders and tape libraries with software to automate operations
  • Desiring a digital linear tape drive solution

The 3447 tape library contains one or two DLT7000 tape drives that have a native data transfer rate of 5MBps and a cartridge capacity of 35GB. Hardware data compression provides an effective data rate of up to 10 MBps and a cartridge capacity of up to 70GB (with 2:1) compression) on DLT-format media. The 3447 features a 15-cartridge capacity, providing a total capacity of up to 1.05TB in the library, using compression and depending on the data being transferred.

Note: Although the tape drive in the 3447 provides the capability for high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. Also, although the compression technology used in the tape drive can typically double the amount of data that can be stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

Each library has a display on the front panel that is used for status and error codes. An operator control panel with LCD display is on the front of the machine and provides status information including current operating mode and menu options for ease of use. From the operator panel the operator can initiate actions such as moving and loading tape cartridges and invoking diagnostics. Control keys located above the display are used for selecting operating options. The 3447 has a see-through front door. A key lock provides front door locking and operator panel lockout capability for security.

The 3447 is attached via a SCSI cable to any IBM Netfinity server or IBM PC Server supporting the IBM PCI Wide UltraSCSI Adapter (76H5407) or the Adaptec 2940 Single-ended SCSI Adapter. The 3447 can be used as an alternate IPL device.

The 3447 has three modes of operation:

  • Manual mode -- controlled by the operator panel switches, allowing complete operator control

  • Autoloader mode -- automatically loads the cartridges into the drives sequentially for reading and writing

  • Random mode -- allows tapes to be selected randomly by the host for reading or writing

The 3447 has two configurations:

  • Base-single host library configuration is intended for attaching the 3447 to a single host where the library is accessible to the host through one SCSI port.

  • Split-dual host library configuration is intended for attaching the 3447 to two hosts where the 3447 appears as two separate half-size libraries on two SCSI buses.

Note: 3447 Digital Linear Tape Drive Kit (59H3569) and a second dedicated SCSI adapter are prerequisites for the split library configuration.

The 3447 Tape library comes with documentation, two keys, a 4.5-meter SCSI cable, SCSI terminator, one power cord, a DLT-format data tape, a DLT-format cleaning tape, a DLT-format setup tape, and a removable cartridge magazine.

Two special features are available for the 3447:

  • IBM 3447 Second Digital Linear Tape Drive Kit (P/N: 59H3569) provides an additional drive and mounting hardware. Installation of a second drive provides additional enhanced functions such as: faster transfer, simultaneous backup, concurrent read-write operations, and fault tolerance.

  • IBM 3447 10-Cartridge Media Magazine (P/N: 59H3558) provides an empty 10-cartridge magazine.

Product Positioning

Many customers are experiencing very rapid growth in on-line storage and struggling to manage critical data in an expanding networked environment. To accommodate this growth, manage this critical data, and reduce manual operations, many are considering tape autoloaders and tape libraries with software for automatic backup and archiving.

Properly positioning competitive tape solutions considers:

  • Amount and loyalty to previous legacy existing tape formats
  • Capacity and performance requirements
  • Data integrity and reliability; availability
  • Storage usage and application requirements
  • Affordability

The IBM 3447 tape library and industry-leading software applications address these requirements and constitute a functionally rich tape storage solution incorporating Digital Linear Tape technology. This tape library offers flexibility for automated tape library management and unattended save/restore operations.

The 3447 tape library contains one or two DLT7000 tape drives that use DLT-format cartridges containing industry-leading 35GB native capacity and up to 70GB with typical 2:1 hardware data compression. Two-drive models provide additional enhanced functions such as: faster transfer of data, simultaneous backup, concurrent read-write operations, and fault tolerance. This increased capacity combined with the 15 cartridges available for use extends the total library capacity up to 1.05TB of compressed data.

The 3447 offers improved performance, additional function, and greater capacity (number of drives and cartridges) over existing internal system Digital Linear Tape drives offered by IBM. The 3447 protects the customer's investment in Digital Linear Tape technology and improves performance by eliminating load/unload time. It is read/write compatible with previous Digital Linear Tape formats, but also provides an enhanced functional alternative to 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives. Customers who have standardized on 8mm tape should consider the IBM 3449 Model 355 or 356 8mm Tape Library for PC Servers.

Technical Description

The 3447 is an automated tape library that can attach to a PC Server. It is supported by a variety of open systems and software applications. The 3447 tape library contains a Random Access Cartridge Loader (RACL) to mount cartridges to one or two tape drives. The RACL is designed to provide three operational modes: manual, autoloader, and random as a base library for attaching to a single host or a split library for attaching to two host systems.

The 3447 tape library contains one or two DLT7000 tape drives that have a native data transfer rate of 5MB/second and a cartridge capacity of 35GB. They feature data compression hardware using an adaptation of IBM's Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) which provides an effective data rate of up to 10MB/second and a cartridge capacity of up to 70GB (with 2:1 compression) on DLT-format media. The 3447 features a 15-cartridge capacity, providing a total capacity of up to 1.05TB in the library. This includes a removable magazine capable of holding ten data cartridges.

Each library has a display on the front panel that is used for status and error codes. An operator control panel with LCD display is on the front of the machine and provides status information including tape capacity and menu options for ease of use. From the operator panel the operator can initiate actions such as moving and loading tape cartridges and invoking diagnostics. Keys located next to the display are used for selecting operating options. The 3447 has a see-through front door. A key lock provides front door locking and operator panel lockout capability for security. A bar code reader is included that allows for positive tape cartridge identification and inventory.
